Step 2: Run your study

You run your protocol in the CARP Studies app, a ready-made Android and iPhone app. A participant installs it, joins a study, and the app collects the data the study asks for. You don’t write any app code. You write the study files in Step 1, and the app follows them.

Nothing to deploy. The app is already published. Participants install CARP Studies from the App Store or Google Play. You don’t build it, sign it or submit it to a store.

It is built on CARP Mobile Sensing (CAMS) and is open source: carp-dk/carp_study_app. More about it on carp.dk.

Join a study

Scan a QR code, type a short study code, or sign in with an invitation. See What participants see.

Give consent

Read what the study collects, then sign on the screen. You can download your signed consent later.

Do tasks

Surveys, short cognitive tests (finger tapping, reaction time), voice recordings, video and photos.

See their own data

Sleep, heart rate, steps and activity charts, and progress in the study.

Connect devices

Health Connect (Android) or Apple Health, plus wearables such as Polar and Movesense.

Collect in the background

Location, weather, air quality and steps keep being collected while the app is closed.

What the participant sees depends on the study. A study with no video task shows no video task, and a study with no wearable shows no wearable.

You take the same protocol through three stages. Only the server and the sign-in change.

Stage Where the study comes from Sign in Data goes to
On your phone Files in the app (assets/carp) Anything works A database on the phone
Test server (dev, test) The CARP Portal A test account or study code CARP’s test server
Production The CARP Portal Participant accounts or a study code CARP’s server (CAWS)
